More japi functionality

Startbeitrag von Oyvind Sylta am 26.06.2001 12:48

Having tried japi over the last few months, I find extremely useful, and quite simle to use compared to other GUI techniques. There are always some features one would like to have. My list includes:

- help tips (e.g. short description of funtion) when the mouse is held above a button

- presetting a list of possible file-types in j_filedialog

- access to html web-pages inside the japi application for user documentation etc.

- multiple user access to the same application: could the japi server be modifed to handle this? all users would see the same GUI, but at different screens. Only one user is actively using the mouse/keyboard.

Comments, anyone ??

- help tips:
Good idea. I will check it, and maybe the next release has a j_addhelp(component,"helptext"). For now, you can add a helpwindow yourself. See the "window" example.

- presetting file-types in j_filedialog:
this is a JAVA bug. You cannot set a filefilter in the java filedialogbox. Use j_fileselector() instead.

- access to html web-pages
Therefor you need a html window component, which is not present in the jre1.1. Does anyone know a free source java 'html-component-class'?

- multiple user access:
This would be a hard job, because it needs to redesign the protocol and therefor the lib and the kernel. Maybe the vnc tools helps:

Best regards

My understanding is that there was a JAVA bug in the filedialogbox, but that it has been fixed in later releases of Java....

I have tried the j_fileselector, and did not like it much. In my application, it behaved strangely.

What about using the javax.swing.filechooser (I know it became available in Java 1.2)?

If you think you have found a bug, please tell me.

At the moment I try to keep JAPI jre1.1 compatible. I know, sometimes I have to switch to JAVA2 to get more functionality (better 2D, 3D, sound and music, swing components etc.). But, at the moment, I don't want to use swings, because then JAPI needs jre1.2.

Btw, have you ever tried the swing component demo, that comes with the JDK1.2. Even on my 900MHz Proc its terrible slow. JAPI (with AWT) runs faster on a 486.

Another alternative is to use a GTK instead of java.....

Have fun

I definitely like the speed of Japi as it is now.
