WinDev 17 Beta Install - Norton problem

Startbeitrag von Scott Daughtry am 26.04.2012 17:03

Last night I installed the WinDev 17 beta onto my WinDev 16 machine. I use the current Norton 360 on my systems. During the installation process an executable is dropped into a Temp folder that is used to update the dongle to WD17 - Norton intercepted that executable and removed it from the temp folder nearly immediately (it's reason being that it was an "unknown program doing weird things" - I couldn't stop Norton from killing it, nor could I get it back from Norton either). The installation continued moving forward, and after it completed WD17 started and then failed because the dongle wasn't updated to WD17 compliance.

I ended up having to disable Norton for an hour and restart the WD17 installation - this time the dongle updated properly and now WD17 beta is up and running on my system.

Hi Scott, it's well known that Windows itself and a bunch of malware detectors behave in an insulting way towards software they don't know. Starts with downloads where downloading people are nearly forced by Windows 7 to delete the downloaded file instead of installing it. Similar behaviour of malware scanners. Microsoft Security Essentials and many other tend to delete important tools like subinacl and others. Sometimes, not even signing of software helps! ssvagent.exe from oracle's java fx sdk is signed by oracle but the uac is always complaining about it! There's no easy way to switch that off - except for switching off the uac itself. Kind regards, Guenter.

It also happend with Norton Internet Security - it is the SONAR switch.
In my installation it also "deleted" an exe called *cloud.exe or something like this ...

Steven - yup - it was the "sonar" feature that killed my dongle update. I don't see how Norton can assign itself Lord and Emporer over every possible file, and just because it has low reporting of the filename that it kills the file with extreme prejudice.

Clarion developers complain loudly about Security Essentials corrupting it's *.TPS database files; several applications I use have embedded within its help files to configure Norton to completely disregard folders where the app's database files are maintained, as it will slow the app to a crawl.. :(

Hi Scott,
Norton's Sonar gets "crazy" about executables that try to "connect automatically" to the internet. Specially when these executables are NOT signed and are really new (just like the betas).
If you know how to handle it, it is really a "nice feature".
As of SE and .TPS files, this is really another issue.
I never understood why SE could interrupt just data files and since I stopped using .tps files in Clarion a long time ago, I have never seen this one ...

I ended up having to configure Norton 360 to ignore the entire WD17 folder - Norton Sonar kept deleting WD17 executables and help files whenever they were being opened from the IDE.
