How fast are Webdev and Windev Mobile apps

Startbeitrag von Jose Dequeker am 01.02.2013 17:59

Hi,

I use Windev for quite a while now. I need to create (server based) Web-applications and native Mobile apps (Android-Windows-I-pad). Are the apps, developed with Windev Mobile and or Webdev as fast as created with lets say ASP.NET, C-Sharp,..

Greetings,
José

Hi José

it's a difficult question, as there is no simple answer...

First, on the web, most of the time spent waiting is due to data access and transfer of the page over the web. These two parameters are not really language dependent, more DB+YourCode+Your design of the pages. So on that aspect, yes, Webdev is as fast.

As for the page management tself (so only a small % of the time spent by the users), I have never made any comparisons, as I really don't see the point.

Then for mobile apps. Remember that windev mobile, just like windev, uses interpreted intermediate code, which means that any application will be slower that one that is fully precompiled.

Now considering that it's possible to do real time applications in windev, is the difference important? It really depends of what you need to do with the tool.

I personnaly would say no, it's not important, not with our current hardware...

Now if you really need speed, I can only suggest that you study assembly language very closely, as even a C (fully compiled) application is at least 10 times slower that a properly designed assembly language application (personal tests, no hearsay)...

Finally, to be able to answer side by side comparisons with the result of other development tools, such as those you are listing, we would need to develop the same app in different languages and do benchmarks...

I'm not saying it wouldn't be interesting... Just that I've never found anybody willing to pay me to do it :-)

Best regards

Fabrice: Isn't this true for Windows Phone only?
It sure is (was) true for the former Window Mobile. Those apps were slooow, however: slow or fast is also a user experience. If I think it is slow, you might not.

I have some apps on Android and these are as fast as others. Windev apps are compiled to native code afaik, but we cannot see how it is done internally. Maybe there still are extra layer(s). Same counts for iOS.

Webdev: as fast as others.
Be aware of the fact that webdev needs it's own engine (does not count for the PHP mode) , on top of IIS or Apache. Not all providers allow you to install such an engine
