WD17: Buying time on a dedicated server, what is the best OS to pick?

Startbeitrag von Jim Carson am 05.03.2013 01:22

Finally gonna pay for a dedicated server, to promote the awesome websites that I have created with Web Dev. I am looking for opinions as to what the best (most reliable) Windows OS to use, (2003, 2008, web version, processor, RAM, bandwidth)

Hi Jim

First, everybody seems to agree that a linux server is more reliable than a windows one... BUT on a linux server, configuring webdev server and HF/SQL can be a challenge AND not all functions will be available. For those reasons (and the fact that I don't know anything about linux), I'm staying with windows servers....

Second, my experience has been that each new version of windows server is more secure and as a direct consequence HARDER to configure...

After that, RAM, speed, processor and so on are extremely dependent of the number of simultaneous users you are planning on having, on the design of your web sites, on the load on the DB (and the type of DB), so it's extremely difficult to answer like that

Best regards

Hi Jim,

I have struggled for months with Linux, with a site that ran fine in testmode on Windows but had loads of internal errors on Linux. Finally I switched to Windows Server and I went from hell to heaven.
If you have problems with Linux it's impossible to do remote debugging (not supported)
The deployment by standalone package is not supported.
Only a few Linux distro's are supported and the ones supported are outdated (some are even discontinued)
The supported distro's change without further notice between Webdev versions and I don't think the Linux Deployment Guide has been updated the last few years.
Remember that PC Soft have years of experience in Windows systems and are relatively new in other OS's.
Hyperfile SQL server on Linux is rock solid though.

Win 2008 with IIS 7 is your best bet bcos that has the best documentation for webserver deployment. The other parameters will depend on what you are doing and the expected load. Its however never too late to consider a VPS for a start then grow to a dedicated server as your load increases.
