WD17&HFSQL Hardware advice

Startbeitrag von CS am 21.03.2013 09:17

Hi All

I know this is probably going to be a very open ended question but here goes anyway...

Can anyone offer advice in relation to hardware spec: RAM, processor type etc for a WD17 app & HFSQL C/S in a network environment.

The setup would be a client/server machine and between 2 to 10 additional clients.

Is it simply a case of the better you get the faster it goes or is WD/HFSQL optimised in any way such that there is no point opting for more than say XGB of RAM as it would be pointless. Would it be better to go for a dedicated server or is that overkill too?

Any advice / experience would be appreciated,

Thanks

Chris

Re: WD17&HFSQL Hardware advice

Hi Chris

2 to 10 clients is a very small load, so there is no need for a monster of a data server (except of course if your application is EXTREMELY data intensive)...

For me, the first factor would be the SIZE of the DB. The reason for that is that you'll see a trememdous increase in speed if your whole DB can be cached in RAM... So if your DB is going to be relatively small (few hundred MB, 2 or 3 GB), make sure that your server has 6 to 8 GB of RAM, with enough RAM dedicated to the HFCS cache to contain the whole DB, and the rest for all the queries and such...

It's a very small trick, not very exepnsive, but VERY efficient.

Best regards

If you cant add RAM to the server add an SSD drive, it will make any machine fly, old laptops all the way up to cranky old servers!

Hi Richard

My test showed that it MAY be true, but it depends a lot of the QUALITY
of the SSD drive and if the system is able to manage it correctly...

In one case, I put a ssd drive on a laptop and gained only 15% of speed
(at the beginning)... Within a few month, the access had slowed so much
that I went back to a regular hard drive...

So yes, it would fly with a GOOOD ssd drive :-). In fact, test
published by a developer on the French forum showed access 200x faster

Best regards
