[WB18] Going crazy with the PC Soft Support Team

Startbeitrag von Michael Drechsel am 16.05.2013 16:05

Hi,

can anybody please check this out:

Download Test Project

Run it with any browser and reduce the width of column1 to 1 cm.

For me in all browser the column title is not over the columns, the support can´t reproduce the error.

Antworten:

Yes! I have got what we can see at your picture.
This is new bug.

As about PC Soft Support - I going crazy too, they not attentive, and agree with the bug after several letters and after giving a more precise definition (and as you understand this is going about 2 week and it is not known when the bug will be fixed...)

My advise, use UVScreenCamera 4.9.0.115 Pro Final to record video from your screen to .avi and send the link to support with demo project.

Hi

sorry, but I concurr with the support. I tested with FF 20.0.1, both with the french 56f and the US 56h versions of webdev 18, and I could NOT reproduce your bug...

I tried to reduce AND expand columns 1 2 and 3 and each time the column header was the same size than the column both during and after the resizing...

Best regards

Than I do not understand at all. I tested this project on the US 56h versions of webdev 18 and this bug is present.

Fabrice, can you try to change this page to mode HTML5 and look at the result? In my test the table do not appear on the page at all.

von Alexander S. - am 16.05.2013 18:41
Mhh, thats a miracle ...

I have this bug in IE10, FF, Chrome, Safari, Opera (funny, Opera shows no table at all).

Could that be an OS thing ? I use a (german) Win7-64.

Or the beginning of a world wide conspiracy ? Only french people have a full functional browser ;)

Hey folks all over the (webdev) world, please test it and post your results here ...

My experience is not related to WB18, but to earlier WD versions.

I have also been told by the PCSoft Support that they cannot reproduce some of my crystal clear bugs, which have been bugging for years. It is really very frustrating.

I suspect, that the reason is some kind of language barrier; maybe they are not using the same language operating system, or they might have French as their default language in their test apps, or...

I think its a question of mentality:

If a user shows me a screenshot with an obvious error and I could not reproduce this,
I can

a) say its not an error and do nothing (the PC Soft way)
b) ask for more information to investigate them (the "normal" way)

Hi Michael,

PC Soft Tech Support is free and therefore generally overloaded. Overloaded with support requests. And because it's a free service, PC Soft will not invest a lot of extra manpower into this service, be assured. Sorry to say that a great deal of service requests are not relevant, means, using the tutorial or a bit more of the gray matter above eyebrows could solve many.

- So, support personnel's first reaction to most service requests tends to say: it's not an error, think again!
- Second, if you can prove that it is a real bug indeed, which will need another two or three e-mails, they will say, ok, it's an error, refer to bug #1234567 if you want to know about further handling. Good bye!

I have seen some errors which haven't been any Wx-errors at all but got a bug number, just because of the insisting behaviour of the requestor. So much for 'real' errors.

Years ago I suggested that PC Soft free tech support should be shut down at all and a bunch of forums should replace them. Instead of answering individual questions, PC Soft support personnel should monitor these forums and offer their help in the forum only whenever support-relevant problems appear. Support guys could ignore all of the the Mickey Mouse questions and could concentrate on real problems, ask for demo-projects and so on. No answer. We know however, that support guys are not allowed to post on any forums. e-mails from Tech Support bear a bottom line: you aren't allowed to publicly use the text of the support mail. There is no listing of known bugs and - like on MSDN - a procedure of how to reproduce the bug. In this respect we're still back in 2000.

Kind regards,
Guenter

P.S. One can always resort to PC Soft PAID Tech Support.

I have made the video of problem resizing the ajax table. Then I send a request of bug to PC Soft.
ajax_table_resize_problems.avi

The behavior is different with different size of browser and different anchoring with width of table.

von Alexander S. - am 17.05.2013 07:26
Hi Guenter,

I full agree with the content of your post.

I am very angry because ajax tables are the main control that I am using in my webdev application and it looks like it will be unusable in WB18. So its a showstopper for me and my expierience with PC Soft are that no fix will be avaible.

von Michael Drechsel - am 17.05.2013 07:58
Hi Alex,

thx for the support. The delimiter lines of the column header in your video are not so good to seen.

Hi,

I tested my small project at another computer and ... it works !!!!!!!!!

The only difference to my laptop is: I use Apache !!!!!

Could it be this is the failure ? At my Laptop I use IIS7.5

Resizing of table cells is made on the JS, I think no difference what server you use.
But all this very strange(

von Alexander S. - am 17.05.2013 10:33
Ok,

I connect with the (working) workstation to the laptop and it works too !!!

Last idea: the graphic card at the laptop ....

von Michael Drechsel - am 17.05.2013 10:35
I think the point is different resolution and wide of screen.

von Alexander S. - am 17.05.2013 11:15

Re: [WB18] Going crazy with the PC Soft Support Team [Error found but no solution]

Yes,

you are right: If I change the resolution to 1280x1024 it works.

And now ? Should I write at my website: Only for users with bad hardware ?

von Michael Drechsel - am 17.05.2013 11:21
I downloaded your test project and have confirmed the following:

The issue exists in IE8/FF v17.01 /Chrome v23/ Opera v12.10

The issue appears to only manifest itself when a control (Table_NoName1) is nested inside another control (CELL_NoName1) and both controls are dynamically determining their widths (Anchoring Width adapt to) based upon the Browser window AND the browser window can accommodate the display of the entire nested control (Table_NoName1).

von Eric W - am 17.05.2013 13:00
Thanks Eric,

I need this construct (Table in a Cell) to make a Splitter in Webdev, which is not possible out of the box.

One more observation if I may.

Editing the GUI property values (X, Y, Width, and Height) of Table controls in v17 & v18 do not appear to affect the control. It appears you can only visually move/size a table with its object handles.

With your test project - in the Editor, change any TABLE_NoName1 column width (from your 100 pixels) to another value without TABLE_NoName1 growing beyond the original 887 pixel width to the sum of all the individual column widths (~1800) resulting in TABLE_NoName1 overflowing its parent CELL_NoName1 & ZONE_NoName2 resulting in a display error.

Editing the TABLE_NoName1 again to force GUI width to 887 pixels has no effect.

The only way to restore the original width is to drag the right object handle and resize the table visually or individually hide (not visible) enough columns till it fits the original 887 pixels. Then subsequently edit the previously hidden columns to be visible and all is well again.

Obviously Table Controls are still a work in progress and should be utilized with this knowledge.

von Eric W - am 17.05.2013 14:36
Hi Eric, this was a great answer!!! Something like I'd expect to get from a support team whether paid or free. Thank you! Kind regards, Guenter

von GuenterP - am 17.05.2013 20:17
Hmmm, this means support may have been right when they could not reproduce the problem..... but the attitude:hot:

Hi Issah, there's simply not enough time for the guys in Tech Support to deal with each request in a sensible way. They're nice guys but they have to give up at an average of 100 support requests per work day. Kind regards, Guenter

von GuenterP - am 18.05.2013 17:18
Hi Guenter,

And I think these figures are underestimate right now (it depends of the time of the year). Currently, the free technical support (in French at least) receives between 500 and 1000 requests per day. (They currently have a backlog of about 10 working days right now. This is my estimation based on my own requests for which I wait answers. And this is not including ongoing exchanges on already given answers for which they sometimes do answer back more quickly.)

Best regards,
Alexandre Leclerc

Instead of complaining, maybe one of us can move over to Montpellier, enjoy the sun and also help us English speaking WX users.
