WB17 - install site next to corporate site

Startbeitrag von Arie am 14.06.2013 07:46

one of my clients already has a corporate site running on IIS, i.e. www.mycompany.com
Now I want to install my wb17 employee-portal next to it.
Is it possible for the users to enter something like www.mycompany.com/portal to get access to the portal ?

I tried this before in another project (wb15 and w2003), and ended up using a second port. www.mycompany.com:8881/portal to get it to work, without conflicts.
Must be my lack of knowledge on this topic ..
btw the coporate site is not WB

Re: WB17 - install site next to corporate site - solved

We've got this working by fiddling around with the IIS settings.
But please don't ask me to write a tutorial. I'm still not sure why it IS working.

Hi Arie

of course it is possible, it is even the way to share a server between a multitude of web sites...

Basically, this is how it works...

First, you have the DNS settings, in which you tell that a domain name points to a sepcific IP address... In this settings, you can specify a different Ip address for subdomains (if you want to), by example www.Mydomain.com points to while employees.Mydomain.com points to

In you case (in mist cases, in fact), you would probably have a DNS setting saying that ALL subdomains points to the same IP...

And of course, you can also have MULTIPLES domains pointing toward the same IP/Server...

Add to that the fact that ONE server can manage MANY different IP addresses, and you get a confusing picture.

This takes us to the second point, the internal server settings...

On the server, IIS (by example) needs to be able to match the requested URL (www.mydomain.com) to a declared web site/virtual directory... How to do that is different in each version of each server, it seems... But by example, in IIS 6, if you go in the web site properties, Web site tab, IP address combo, you can select which IP address goes to which website, but that is not all. Right next to this combo, the ADVANCED button lets you specify which domain AND subdomain points to this physical web site.

By example, IP is ALL unassigned (default value when only using ONE IP address for the whole server). And in the advanced settings, you can have as many lines as you want:
IP Port host header value
default 80 mydomain.com
default 80 www.mydomain.com
default 80 employee.mydomain.com

So if in here, you set the employee.mydomain.com for a DIFFERENT physical web site./virtual directory on the server, you get exactly the effect you were asking for.

Best regards

Thanks Fabrice,
now we have a tutorial.
And this is the way we did it, I believe.
