How to use WDINT + WDTRAD?

Startbeitrag von Ola (not signed in) am 14.07.2013 09:02

Hi all

I am trying to get the head and tail of WDINT + WDTRAD tools to translate the messages in the exe from English to my language.

I don't understand what the initialization "wizard" asks. Where and how to specify the language to translate FROM and where to specify the language to translate TO??? They are just talking about the translation file, but without clearly specifying the FROM and TO aspect of it.

It also offers to restore the language?!?!?! Restore what? I have not yet saved anything?!?!?

I have tried a couple of times with different settings, but I always get about half a dozen error messages, such as "cannot translate to the same language", and a "lotto" in WDTRAD which gives me some weird language in the control which shows the language to translate to.

Also, in WDTRAD using the mouse wheel very easily changes the TO language to something else.

My first impressions of these "tools" is that they are very buggy and not properly tested.

And they do charge REAL MONEY for this bag of bugs!

I understand that these are rather old products, and re-sold at a ridiculous price again with every version number change of Wx. I just wonder how many decades does it take from PC Soft to get a very simple piece of software to work correctly and fix its easy bugs????

Should I take a back-up copy of Wx's DLL's before really attacking them with this terrorist software?

Bad show, PC Soft!

Hi Ola,

I can fully agree with your "bag of bugs" conclusion.
Also I would like to add "very user-unfriendly by design."
If I remember correctly I said in a previous post that probably a drunken intern created this tool.
I did my translations with version 15 and have not touched it since.

(Still using these translations with my current version, which is 16)
PCSoft probably did not touch it either since, but still charge for an upgrade.
Indeed, the Help was in French in v15 too.

You can "manage the dictionary" by right clicking in the reference/translation table below.
The dictionary is a complete riddle to me.
It also frequently crashed.
I cannot find a way to add anything to it but complete lines, which is not very helpful, because most messages don't appear more than once. Being able to replace words or phrases would be much more helpful.

So I did all translations by hand, but restricted it to things like the table AAF and other stuff the end-users get to see.
I'm really missing a simple search and replace.
Perhaps it's an option to translate the Yourlanguage_origine.txt and save it as Yourlanguage_traduction.txt using a different translation tool.

But the following may help you:
In the startup wizard you can choose the option to "check out" (=extract) the messages from the dll's.
No need to backup the dll's.
You can also choose the translation language there.
Then the files Yourlanguage.wdm, Yourlanguage_origine.txt and Yourlanguage_traduction.txt are created

In step two you select the .wdm file, after which you can start translating.
To load the finished translation, you include the .wdm file in your exe directory and do a LoadError("Mylanguage.wdm")

Piet

Hi Piet,

Thanks for your comments and advise.

I also plan to translate mainly the AAF messages (there are less than 200 of them). Actually I already did this. However, all the other messages (several thousands of them) are empty in my language. Will these be automatically filled with the original English (or French,,,) messages during runtime?

Hi Ola,

Yes, the empty ones will be in English.

Started another session with WDTRAD.
Now the file names default to the last ones used. Positive surprise.

Wonder what the following buttons might do:
- "Auto Trad." ???
- "Copy Ref." ???
- "Copy Trans" ???
- "Save" is obvious. So I try to press Alt+S, as the S is underlined. Nothing happens. How about clicking the button with mouse? It works! How about Control+S? Surprisingly, it works too!
- "Find" is obvious. So I try to press Alt+F, as the F is underlined. Nothing happens. How about clicking the button with mouse? Clicking does not work, nothing happens! How about Control+F? Surprisingly, it works!
- "Print" is obvious. So I try to press Alt+i, as the i is underlined. Nothing happens. How about clicking the button with mouse? Surprisingly, here it works. How about Control+P? Surprisingly, it works!
- "Systran" obviously calls Systran translation service, if both languages are supported by it.
- "Restore ref." ???

If I was a teacher and this was a school work, I would reject it.
If I had made it, I would be ashamed of it.

Hi Ola, you can get a fairly good translation of the WDTRAD Help with Google. Just select the full text and paste it into Google's translation field.

Hi Guenter,

Have you tried your suggestion? The help file seems to be protected, the text cannot be copied. And, come to think of it, is it really the customer's duty to translate a product's documents to the language that they are supposed to be by default?

Hi Ola, of course not. These days I received a special copy of WDTRAD and in order to understand what it does I did exactly this. Copy + paste / translate. For me - it worked just fine. To calm you down a bit: I suggested a few improvements. Sorry, details are clasified info. Besides of these suggestions it had been possible to use WDTRAD for several thousand lines (aka translations) without a single crash. Conceded, one has to become familiar with this tool - the missing English Help is not not so helpful here.
