[WD18] HFCS service not starting on MS Server 2008 - SOLVED

Startbeitrag von Al am 31.07.2013 07:44

Hello All

I have installed HFCS V18 63c onto an MS Server 2008.R2

The Manta service starts and runs ok. The Hyperfile service starts and then stops.
I have tried a different port than 4900 - same thing
I have tried running it as "Interact with Desktop and also as Not Interacting - no change.

Regards
Al

Hi Al,

One reason for a stop can be that HFCS cannot find a database.
Did you check HFConf.ini for a valid database root path?

Piet

Re: [WD18] HFCS service not starting on MS Server 2008

Hello Piet

Thanks for responding. I don't think that is the issue. I am still at the installation of the HFCS software, and because the Hyperfile server won't start, I can't get to the part where I can create a database.

I have tried it on an XP computer and on my Win8Pro laptop and everything installs perfectly so I think it must be something to do with the setup of the server.

Hi Al,

I think it has to do with rights on your 2008 server. I had these issues before and installed HFCS in i.e. the Temp directory. Everything worked OK then. Maybe you can try this and see what's happening.

Good luck

Aad

Re: [WD18] HFCS service not starting on MS Server 2008

Hi Al,

I have HFCS 17 running on Windows Server 2008.
This is the HFConf.ini file:
Quote

[INIT]
DBRootPath=%%COMMONAPPDATA%%\PC SOFT\ServeurHyperFileSQL_vzs\BDD
Name=vzs
AccessPort=4900
ServerLogPath=%%EXE%%Logs\
ServerLogLevels=
ServerLogMaxSize=60
ActivityStatisticPath=%%EXE%%\ActivityStatistics
ActivityStatisticPeriod=0
MoreThan2Go=0
WLDebugPort=27281
NdxCacheSize=512

Perhaps you can compare this to your own ini file.

Regards,
Piet

Hello Piet

Thanks very much for the file. I will try it out tomorrow.

Hello All

Problem solved - but strange solution.
It was the ini file from Piet (thanks again) that pointed us in the right direction.

The following statements in the [INIT] section of the HFConf.ini file must have UNC paths - if not then the HyperFile Server service fails.

DBRootPath = \\Servername\folder
JNLRootPath = \\Servername\folder
JNLBackupRootPath = \\Servername\folder

The other paths can have UNC or shared drive\folder names
ServerLogPath = X:\Project\Logs
PerformancePath = X:\Project\Logs

Why this is the case is anyones guess. It was definitely the path statements that caused the problem because as soon as they were changed it all worked

The server is Windows 2008R2 SP1 running Citrix xenapp so maybe Citrix is part of the problem.

The sad part is that the Hyperfile Server Service just failed - no log entry, no message to indicate why - when all it would have taken to point us in the right direction was a message to say something like "Can't locate folder in DBRootPath"

Al

Hello All

I have an update on this from Tech support, to pass on.
Although the solution I found works, PCSoft advise quite strongly against having the Manta engine and the data on separate servers.

"It’s a very bad choice to have your data on another server (your treatments will be slower, you will have all networks problems…).
I Advise you to say to your client to use :
- HyperFileSQL Client/Serveur cluster
- or replication between HyperFileSQL Client/Serveur "

I agree with them, it makes no sense to me that my client's hardware experts want to have separate servers - the joys of virtual servers.

Hi Al,

Incredible!
Those hardware experts just don't get it do they?

Piet
