WD - Word integration

Startbeitrag von Arie am 28.09.2013 12:31

Hello all,

in one of my projects I need Word integration for making professional looking documents (invoice, offer/quotation, newsletters, etc).

WD reporting is not good enough, that's too much a report tool. And I've seen some off you complaining about the PDF creation, when it comes to avanced things like tables, copy/pase images and RTF fields. Which makes it useless in this case.
But certainly data has to fit in, like name+address of course. But also orderlines, product and prices and so on.

I also need some kind of document-system build into my software. So when I select a customer in the CRM module, I see all his documents. And open, edit print, mail, save it, etc.

I rather make the right decision now, to get a jumpstart.
Should I use MSword mail-merge? Or go the OLE route? Other?

Any hints and tips, caveats, pros and cons, are welcome.

Antworten:

I did not have any problems with the reporting tool to create professional looking forms. So I see no need to use Word for documents.

Hi.

I use reports an all of the project and I have had not issues that I can remember. Invoices can be converter in PDF with the builtin functions, sent to email, etc.

But in one project i used MSWord and OLE instead of reports, since my client (a lawyer) need to modify and add new documents on a regular basis . It works well too for all type of documents, even for invoices with his order lines.

But if you don't need the reports to be modified or added very frequently, I would go the report route since you will have much more control of how the information is printed (and thereforce will look more professional)

Regards,
José Antonio.

I'm for instance referring to this post from Al where he has problems with RTF and PDF
http://27130.foren.mysnip.de/read.php?27131,173301,173301#msg-173301

And in this case I want users to have all flexibility of Word.
I certainly don't give them the User Report&Query tool, because that's far too complicated for them.

Hi Arie

It's good and bad with flexibility. If you use f.ex. mail-merge to build an invoice you have no control over what happens with the invoice (the document) after you have created it. If customers get creative and change the invoice after you have generated it you have two invoices with the same invoice number but with different content. If you make reports of tax based on your invoices, it is not nessasarily correct values in them.

I'v just made a really nice looking invoice in WB18 and with the extra functions you find in WD18 it should not be any problem. One thing though - I have no rtf in my invoice so I may just be lucky :-)

Best regards

The problem of AI thread it seems was because of microsoft word since affects other applications too.

Anyway, since your clients need to add/modify/copy and paste/etc the documents, I would also use MSword. And you can also use reports when you need. For example:

When user add a new document, the application asks:

1."New from file": A file browser opens and you can take any file.
2."New from template": A file browser opens the folder with all MSWord templates, and after then the document selected will be filled autmatically.
3."New from report": Some advanced report difficult to do in word without a lot of programming in Windev. In general, any reports containing an itineration field (like ordersline) will take you much work by programming (number of columns, width of columns, formating of table like borders, etc).

José ANtonio.
