WD17 - large size of project file

Startbeitrag von Arie am 23.11.2013 16:07

I have several project. All project have a projectfile (WDP) of several MB's
Except for one, which is over 80MB. This is indeed my largest project, but not 25 times as large as all others.
In WD17 some actions take forever, i.e. SCM stuff with this file. Every time I open the project it does some checking, which also takes quite long.
Repair the project did not change anything.
Is this a normal size? If not, is there a way to build this file from scratch?

Hi Arie !

Are you try to connect to SCM with "Admin" and
then to choose menu option Tools->Maintenance->Reindex and Repair and try all options, special one: Analyze and Repair. I hope this is what you looking for.

Regards !

Hello Arie

the wdp file contains, AFAIK:
- the project code (init, close)
- all the project linked multilingual messages
- a list of all the project objects/windows/pages/classes
And that's all I can think of.

So to reach 80 MB, you would need to have a LOT of multilingual messages that could be stored potentially somewhere else (by example by creating a class for them). However, moving them would be a long and tedious process (except if you have only a few VERY LONG messages, but somehow I doubt it)

Let us know what you find

Fabrice, that's what I thought too.

Well there are translations. Beside Dutch I have English, French and German.
The extracted textfiles however (from WDMSG) are about 500k. Not even near to 80MB.

This project is coming from WD9. Then WD11 and Wd14, now WD17. I have dozens of backups and ever since 2010 (WD14) or so, with a size of about 7MB in those days, the project file is growing with 1 or 2 MB per month. If I could develop new features that fast I would be rich by now (which I'm not)

I'm going to create a new project, import everything to see if that helps. Will let you know one of these days.

Hey Arie,

can you check the versions in the WDP-file?
In the main-menu: File -> Versions
When you check out the .WDP, then you can delete older versions if present.

Another trick is to save the .WDP with the "File-Save As" twice. Let's say your project name is "ABC", so .WDP-file is "ABC.WDP" => Save as "ABC1.WDP" and save as "ABC.WDP" again. Size should be smaller. Works also with other elements such as windows, reports,... Be carefully with the SCM, renaming elements can make your life difficult...

ps. try it out with a copy of the project...

Xavier, that's the trick indeed. Thanks!
Save-as followed by another save-as back again.
Now the project file is about 500kb, which seems normal to me.
I did a repair and even a recompile of the project and it still looks good.
