OCR

Startbeitrag von Kevin am 16.07.2009 15:29

Hi Everyone!

I would like to make a system that is able to take the scanned image of a form and, after extracting numeric data from the image, file it in a Hyperfile for further processing. WinDev's Twain functions should be able to get the image but I am going to need some OCR functionality to extract the data. I expect the data to be at predictable locations on the form but the values may be either type written or hand written. I don't think that WinDev has OCR functionality (I'd be delighted to be told that I am mistaken!) so I am assuming that I will need to use a third party system along side Windev.

If anyone has any experience of this and can offer any guidance as to the best way to do it and/or the best OCR system to utilise I should be most grateful.

Best Regards

Kevin (UK)

Hi Kevin,

there are cheap solutions and there are good ones. Once upon a time we used Teleform from http://www.cardiff.com/ to translate partially handwritten forms to meaningful text / documents. Cardiff started off with a product that read fax documents and translated them to documents. As you can see from their web site, meanwhile things have changed and expanded a lot.

Later, I found a free OCR-DLL but did not use it. It's somewhere on a CD in my cupboard, uh, closet. But maybe, you can find one here: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Best/ocr-library-dll.html

The problem areas are: positioning of the text, quality of handwriting, the OCR-scanner itself and the skew of the page while passing through the scanner. For testing & first steps, a simple flatbed scanner will suffice but for real world applications you'll need a professional scanner device which feeds / processes hundred or more documents in one go.

Kind regards,
Guenter

windev doesn't have OCR functions (at least I know).

But you can use several OCR softwares depending of your needs, even some freeware. some samples:

Guenter, Paulo and Riben.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll have a look at them and see what I can do.
