WD remotely sharing reports and other files

Startbeitrag von Piet van Zanten am 07.08.2009 15:35

Hi All,

As some may have understood from my previous post I'm considering changing my main application to hfcs. While copying datafiles to I stumbled upon a major caveat.
The users in the company have a large shared pool of non-hyperfile files (reports, Word documents used for mailmerge etc.) that will not be automatically accessible on a remote connection, since they are stored on a local network drive.
I thought of two options to make these file remote available:
1. Store these files in memo fields in one or more hyperfile file(s).
2. Download them using httprequest or ftp.

Any other ideas?

Regards,
Piet

Re: WD remotely sharing reports and other files

Hi Piet...

I usually have a Document file in my DB in which all files are stored as
binary memo and linked to other records using (filename+recordID)

This solution allows you to share the doc, manage the status (extracted
for modification, ie read only, or work on a copy...) and access
permissions quite easily

Best regards

Fabrice,

That is a great idea! I have always had problems with documents being deleted or moved outside the application.

However, some of the documents I have to track are 3D CAD files which are really a collection of files in a folder and we track the folder. Any suggestions in this case?

Jeff

Hi Jeff..

2 ideas, in fact... Either you zip the directory and store the zip in the document file, or you add a grouping code to the document file and you save each of the file in the directory in a record but all of them have the same grouping code...

Zipping will probably take a little more time, but no process will be able to access PART of the folder alone (ie not even a bug in your code :-)... Grouping lets you add things in the 'directory' without having to unzip rezip...

So it depends of you apps needs, basically

Best regards
