Startbeitrag von Malcolm am 08.06.2016 22:17

I know Windev but i never did something with WedDev.

Can any provider host the 'WebDev' site in combination with MSSql of MySQL database ?

Hey Malcolm,

You may or may not be surprised to know that it's not quite as simple as you might imagine...

In simple terms the answer to your questions is "Yes", BUT with a great deal of conditions! If you already own WB, then I would suggest that you start by reading the Concepts manual (or download it from here; http://www.windev.com/webdev/index.html). For some reason these are still the V20 manuals, but should suffice for what you are asking.

Page 12 of the Concepts manual starts by explaining the different types of sites that can be created with WB, i.e. Static, Semi-Dynamic & Dynamic, and page 13 then goes some of the way to answering your question, but then subsequent pages give diagrammatical explanations of the different modes.

As you will see when you read on... it's not just about the kind of site as a whole, but also about the pages within the site, as pages can then be created in any of 5 different modes; Static, Semi-Dynamic, Dynamic WebDev, Dynamic WebDev AWP and Dynamic PHP - phew!

Then... we always suggest giving the Tutorial a go - there are various sections starting with static and building up to Dynamic AWP pages.

HTH to get you started...

Hello Malcolm,

of course it's possible. On the PCSoft web site, there is a whole page of specialized WebDev hosting providers... Just sent them an email with your precise specification and choose the answer that you like.

I'm pretty sure that all of them offer that combination, but I'm sure that kalanda.net does.

Best regards

Hi Darren, Fabrice,

I know it's not like 'Windev' and i still have doubts for using WebDev the make sites.
Maybe it's better to use a common tool ?

On the other hand my experience with Windev is very very positive.
It's just an amazing tool for building software.
I hope WebDev will surprice me in the same way...

Thank for the reply...

Malcolm,

WB can generate websites in PHP mode. In that case any provider can host it. But in this mode not all fancy controls are available. I don't know the details, maybe others can be more specific,

In all other cases the WB engine (rendering framework) must be installed on the webserver on top of Apache or IIS.
And this it not something any provider supports. But still a lot do as Fabrice mentioned. btw: the engine is free for up to 10 simulatenous users. Otherwise you have to buy a license from pcsoft for 299 euros (per server)

Malcolm,

Just to add to Arie's comments - the PHP offering has got much better!!

WB20 is very good now for business sites - especially ecommerce. The manuals (as always) could be a bit better, and trial and error also works.

I have had several discussions with Fabrice about the pros / cons of PHP over Webserver. For the small owner / user it has to be php every time in my opinion. Especially with the ability to add in JS / php snippets and the ability to call external php scripts. This makes it very flexible AND fairly seemless to the end user.

I hope my small contribution helps.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Malcolm,

If you want the charts etc then you have to use the webdev application server.

By the way php modus does work but is limited. A lot of W language functions donot work!!
If you want to use Json then do not try php modus

Programming for the applcation server give you more w language functions and more nice controls like the chart. But over all it just works better. More windev like

If php is not a requirement if you need a webapplication ( not a website ) do yourself a big favour and use the applicationserver.

Host your site with pc soft and you get the application server Free!!. You can host on any vps. Like the ones of strato. Then you get a vps with 2 GB mem for 9 Euro month!!

The fact that PC soft gives you the application server forFree with their hosting has a big impact on the PC soft Pricing. Indeed they are not so expensive as you would think:spos:

However you have to use hyperfile cs for the database. ( not a bad thing in my opinion)

regards
Allard
