convert from windev to webdev

Startbeitrag von Noel Tanti am 27.12.2016 16:34

Hi Guys,

this might sound like a stupid question but here goes :)

I have a windev system and am converting to webdev, as client is going to have several offices and one system and replicaiton is out of question as updates need to be instant
.
I need to convert quite a large number of screens.

Is this possible even if one needs to do a lot of tweaking them?

Thanks
Noel

Hi Noel,

So you did not bite the bullet yet in may this year.
See my post http://27130.foren.mysnip.de/read.php?27131,605243,605417#msg-605417
I saw a video about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r2ByVsn-zA&t=373s
If you understand French it may be of help.

Piet

Hi Noel,

If the requirement is to run the application over the internet and it is an in-house application (not a B2B or B2C website) you might look into using Microsoft RemoteAPP to run the Windev app on a central server and push to users over internet. This works great for us. We have several clients with multiple offices or people who work from home.

If you have an application with heavy printing requirements I'd also recommend TSPrint.

Hi Noel,

Just like Steve says, look into RemoteApp, specially TSPlus (www.tsplus.net). This works great, is inexpensive and no converting and changing to your existing software. Your customer will be very satisfied.

Hi Noel,

I am doing the same thing. TS plus is great by the way. But not when exploitation a SAAS web APP with a view hundred or thousand of users or if you need be able to give lots of potential users a trial account etc.

a lot more can be done with less server costs that is for sure wit a web app. TS plus does cost some 1000 euro and a big vps or dedicated server. Web dev app server can run great on a strato vps ( 9 euro Per month) . Running 100 sessions can be done!!

Converting windev to web depends a lot on your screens. How advanced are they? Windev has a view controls that webdev does not have. So using these controls will not work. You will have to find a work around or a complete different approach for that

Different approach:
If you are a windev developer starting with the web, take this as an opportunity to lurn how to make web screens. The web is not desktop windows.
The code:

Code is not always the same!! Not even if the function or the control is the same!. So If something is not supported you will have to work around that.
Over all

Over all it is quite doable to build a web app from a windev app. I use about 80 % of the code. The simple stuff goes easy with 100% of code reuse. More difficult takes more time trying things etc.

TsPlus

Hello Aad,

I also tried TsPlus but we have a few problems.

- in the print preview the selection of the printer does not work.
- the dymo sdk does not load
- opening a word document (also merging)
- scanning on the remote desktop

Hope you have some answers/ideas
Thanks in advance

FTR, I've never used TSPlus, we just use RemoteAPP built into windows server (2008, 2012)

Hi All

@Piet : I have to bite it now and will go through your post and get going. The sooner I start the sooner I finish.

Re Remote app : there will be a few companies running various apps and am afraid the VPS will not have enough processing power. For now it might be a solution but going forward it will not be.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback

Happy new year to all.

Noel

Hi Frans,

TSPlus has it's own "printer" called Universal Printer. This pushes a PDF-file to your local station and you can print via your PDF-viewer. Also you can print directly to your local printer.

I can't say anything about Dymo.sdk. Is this a driver for your Dymo printer ?

Word documents on the server can be pushed to your local PC or opened on the server. I don't know about merging.

You can use the USB ports of your local station. There's is a separate driver for this. On their website there's is more information about this.

Support is really good.

Best regards,

Aad Gouka

I hoped there was a better solution.

My tests gave an error. I will try to install the server solution. Don't know about pushing to the local pc??
