[WD21] Are they EVER(!) going to fix the report designer?

Startbeitrag von Ola am 07.03.2017 13:09

Hi all,

I wonder whether PCSoft is EVER(!) going to fix the very shaky and volatile report designer?

I just touched an old report, changed the width of one column, and after that, the report lost the break calculation on another column; it started to calculate another break total field!

Bad show, PCSoft, shame on you.:sneg:

Best regards
Ola

Hi Ola,

I feel your pain!

The worrying thing for me is that the report designer has got much (much) better since V12, but it's still very flakey at best!

Hi,

I went with Combit List & Label and have not regretted one day - When you drop RD send me a PM and I can supply a class that helps with using List & Label API DLL from WinDev.

Cheers

Hi Tor-Bjarne,

Thank you for your kind offer. Unfortunately the Combit List & Label is rather expensive -- the cheapest version nearly 800 euros -- and most of my reports are ready and working already, so, for me, at least for the time being, it's not an option.

I'll keep on fighting with the PCSoft crap. I now know pretty well its quirks, and I can tame it when necessary.

The important thing with WD report designer is to try and design the report as ready as possible, before starting to create it with the designer. Later changes are problematic. When doing changes, save often, but only when the report is still OK and operational. If any changes later are necessary, do not use the mouse to move or adjust anything (*in the column headers, body, break and totals section*), use the numerical entry fields. And then re-check that nothing important hadn't changed "automatically" at the same time. If something unwanted changes, abandon the report immediately (before it does any auto-saving), then re-open it and start again.

Any changes that WD does "automatically", usually cause the report to be beyond repair, and in the worst cases it also breaks the whole app!

I just can't stop wondering, how PCSoft can keep on delivering this bottom quality crap year after year. Maybe they can't fix? Maybe it's just an uncontrollable herring salad spagetti with meatballs, oat porridge and Chanel 5 under the hood?

Best regards
Ola

Hi,

Yes Combit LL quite expensive :(

I have not studied LL Reports but would it not be possible to automatic make a backup to another backup-reports folder before modifying the report?

In this way you could restore "last working version" if anything fails?

All files replaced in my app (new reports are distributed via a web-service) and are send to a method in a class that makes a same-name-file.000 version of the file in a backup folder, and can be restored until version 1.

Cheers

Hi,

Of course, having fresh backups is mandatory before attacking a WD report.

WD has a great principle: everything in one package, even a report designer! Unfortunately the quality of much of this "everything" is below acceptable, especially the report designer!

Hi ccc2,
just wondering: how would you integrate BIRT reporting with a WINDEV windows application?

for Report Server, my recommendation

1. Crystal Report
2. SSRS
3. Birt Reporting

I highly recommend Crystal Report if money is not an options, else SSRS if you using SQL server database. if not then Birt Reporting.

I will Recommend SSRS over crystal reports if it's not that it's part of SQL SERVER modules.

WD Report designer is way too simple and old which you cannot compare to nowdays reporting tools.

if I list it out the differences , you don't want to use WD report anymore
