WinDEV Impressions

Startbeitrag von Steven Sitas am 15.10.2010 16:30

Hello,

After working for a year or so with WinDEV, I must say that I am really impressed.
Coming from Clarion, It took me some time to feel comfortable with the "new paradigm".

The only thing left, that makes it "difficult to use WinDEV" is the Data Model Editor.
If I could have the same file - may times - in different folders, I would be the happiest man in the world :-)

Hi Steven,

look at functions like HChangeName(), HChangeDir(), HAlias() ... and you will be the happiest man in the world  Have also a look at HCopyFile() for copying HF-files from/to/on HF C/S.

Kind regards,
Xavier
Senior WinDev/WebDev/Mobile consultant

Hi Steven,

if I understand you right, you should look for halias in the help and all the related things.
I found it is more flexible than the approach in Clarion to have several physical files with one definition in different directories and even with different names in the same directory and so on. No need to define an alias in the analysis.

Hope that helps

Erik

Sorry for the confusion.

I mean I want to be able to "duplicate a file/table" NOT physically BUT in the data modeller.

Lets say I have a table called "Customers".
I would like to be able to ADD this file to as many FOLDERS I want in the Data Modeller.

Why?
I don't know clarion, but isn't Xavier&Erik solution what you need?

von Paulo Oliveira - am 15.10.2010 17:24
No Paulo,

Here is what I wan't to do:

1. Design a table "Customer" in the MAINGROUP of my Analysis.
2. Make a NEW custom_folder in the Analysis named SALES
3. Make a NEW custom_folder in the Analysis named CRM

Now I wan't to be able to have my "Customer" file in both the custom_folders - SALES and CRM - in the Analysis.

"Customer" is only ONE file, I just want it - at the design face - to be in both custom_folders.
And thats because "Customer" has links to files, that belong in BOTH custom_folders.

I hope it is clear now ...

yes.
links and folders are a problem at least until V14.
to make a link between Customer and the other files you have to move the other files to the maingroup, create the link and move then back to the original folder.
this is the only way i know to do this and you are rigth it's dificult and time consuming.

Afaik you can link a table to a "folder". Just start at a table and drag the line to a folder.
Then a popup shows you the tables in that particular folder and you can choose one. After that the link-wizard continues as usual.
Works in wd14 and wd15

'Data Modeller' = Analysis?? Right-click on file, choose 'Copy', and right-click on empty space and 'Paste'. In the Analysis, Lasso-operation works as well and if you choose 10% for display size you can even 'lasso' a whole analysis and copy it to another project. Negative: after pasting, the looks of the result is deplorable and you have to re-qarrange files and relations. Regards, Guenter

Hi Guenter,

I just hope PCSoft adds this "feature" as soon as possible.
Sometime ago (I think v12) there was a topic on the help files about doing it ...

Ufortunatelly it didn't work and the topic was removed fom the help files.

Hi Steven, this worked with v10 already! You can move / duplicate whole files and groups of files freely between different projects. When copying & pasting several files the only drawback is that the arrangement of files and relations is destroyed while pasting and you have to re-arrange them within the new analysis. Using folders in the analysis is a pain to say the least and I prefer to have a single analysis plane with 200 files or more over having several planes and being handicapped in the process of drawing relations and seeing what's really going on. If you really have to maintain several identical files within the same analysis then name them like CUSTOMERS_MAIN, CUSTOMERS_CRM etc. Regards, Guenter

Hi Guenter,

1. I don't want to copy files/tables to another Project. I know I can do that ....

2. I don't want to maintain several identical files in the same analysis.
I Just have ONE file called CUSTOMERS.
I wan't THIS ONLY FILE to show up at many PLANE/ANALYSIS GROUPs

I am using MS VISIO ENTERPRISE and I can insert as many Pages/Planes in it AND drag whatever file I want in these Pages.

Arie posted a message on this forum (sometime ago) pointing to the helpfile, that says how to accomplish this.

Unfortunately it doesn't work AND the topic is now removed from the new Help Files.

" A file description can be associated with several custom-folders"

and

"To associate a file description with a custom-folder:
1. Select the file description that must be associated with the custom-folder.
2. "Drag and Drop" the description to the relevant custom-folder. The description is automatically associated with the custom-folder.
Note: If the description already belonged to a custom-folder, the description is only associated with the new custom-folder. In order for the description to be associated with the two custom-folders, keep the [Ctrl] key down during "Drag and Drop"."
