WB15 - How to create a help system for the user

Startbeitrag von Joel am 27.11.2010 19:38

Hi -

I have a very extensive web application and need to create the "Help" part of the system. I can think of several ways to go, but not sure which is 'best'. I already have a "Library" table that I store documents in, web page content, etc. Should I use this or create a table all unto itself?

Then, I figured that the help file, since it's a database, only needs to be in the "Master file" of the organization and then each company that uses the system can access that one file through an HAlias or something. This way, I don't need to send changes to each company's database when help is changed or added. Does this approach sound reasonable?

I also figure that each help topic would open in it's own small browser window, and could be printed from there if desired. Yes?

Any and all suggestions appreciated!

Hi Joel

the standard way of doing this is to create a web site (or part of a web
site) dedicated to the help: help.mywebsite.com, by example

There you have static pages with the test (as the content doesn't change
a lot) and a menu allowing to access the whole help.

As the pages are static, it's possible to point to a specific help page
from anywhere in your real web site.

This also allows (if you want it) your prospective customer to read the
help before they decide to buy

Of course, you could also decide to use a dynamic site for that but that
would complicate matters on the standpoint of referencing the pages and
therefore attracting more customers by using your help.

Best regards
