SunnComm's MediaMax Copy Management Technology is Included On a Record 10 Million CDs in North America
TUESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2005 8:00 AM
- BusinessWire

PHOENIX, Jan 18, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SunnComm International, Inc. (SCMI) , the U.S. leader in digital content security and enhancement for optical media, announced today that it has eclipsed 10 million CDs featuring its MediaMax copy management and enhancement suite of products. More than 25 record labels with 75 commercial releases throughout North America used SunnComm's MediaMax technology last year. SunnComm's president, Peter H. Jacobs, says, "Our growth in sales in 2004 represents more than a 50-fold increase over our previous year. Record companies using our MediaMax technology get the CD content protection they need while consumers are treated to value-added MediaMax features they've never before experienced on a CD." Jacobs concludes, "SunnComm dominates our market space in North America by listening carefully to our record label partners and to the people who buy the music. SunnComm adapts, and adapts very quickly." SunnComm earns royalties for every CD that integrates its MediaMax technology.

The company has consistently been "first to market" with digital security and enhancement solutions that work. SunnComm has signed agreements with 3 of the 4 major record labels, including Sony BMG, (www.sonybmg.com) EMI, (www.emigroup.com) and, most recently announced, the 5 year agreement with Universal Music Group (www.umusic.com). SunnComm also has reseller agreements or works closely with the world's largest CD manufacturing facilities including Sonopress LLC (www.sonopress.com), Cinram (www.cinram.com) Sony DADC (www.sonydadc.com), and Music City Optical Media, Inc. (www.mcominc.com).

Also today, SunnComm announces that 101 Distribution, LLC (www.101distribution.com) entered into a licensing and reseller agreement for the use of MediaMax CD content management and enhancement technology. Under the terms of the agreement, the music distribution and production company will use the newest version of MediaMax technology for many of the independent artists that it represents. As with all past SunnComm revenue agreements, there are no minimum usage requirements beyond those that determine per-disc manufacturing royalties.

Scott Stoegbauer, VP Sales & Marketing at QuietTiger (QTIG) , SunnComm's exclusive marketing arm, points out, "The licensing agreement we just signed with 101 Distribution is the same type of arrangement we've had with every independent and major record label to date. Even though no minimum usage is called for in the agreement, our customer experience proves that MediaMax technology works and has the potential of generating substantial incremental revenue by minimizing sales drop-off. Once our record label customer experiences that result first-hand, they enthusiastically embrace the technology." He continued, "The labels become more and more committed to the technology as sales increase and consumer acceptance is demonstrated by the minimal number of customer complaints."

SunnComm's entertainment industry consultant, Artie Ripp points out, "Of the 10,000,000 + MediaMax CDs produced, none were the result of any record label's contractual obligation to a minimum use of MediaMax technology under the terms of their SunnComm license agreement. SunnComm further solidifies these strategic relationships by fulfilling each record label's particular MediaMax design and production needs immediately after entering into a license agreement. In every instance where a record label and SunnComm have entered into a license agreement, SunnComm has consistently exceeded expectations related to design, production, quality assurance, and timely delivery of a finished product."

Founded by musicians for musicians, 101 Distribution began shipping orders of independent music titles to major and independent music retail stores in November of 2001 providing a solution that nationally markets and physically distributes independent music. The national distribution of independent music is a fragmented market encumbered by major record label domination of conventional retail. 101 eliminates the administrative burden for record stores who seek to qualify independent music for shelf placement while providing every level of musician with an opportunity for national distribution.

101 Distribution is a group that serves independent artists while fulfilling the needs of music retailers who want to increase foot traffic into their stores. 101 creates value for musicians by providing them with more sales profits and a flexible and fully integrated environment where they can start, develop and progress their careers and distribution potential. 101 Distribution is a global network that exists to empower independent artists and labels by providing a direct channel into major and independent music retail. 101 artists have access to a menu of retail promotion programs designed to compliment existing marketing efforts for local, regional, or national campaigns.

SunnComm International Inc. (SCMI) has become the leader in digital content enhancement and security technology for audio compact disc media since it launched America's first commercial copy managed CD in 2001. Three years and 4 MediaMax versions later, 2004 has been a year of milestones for SunnComm including Anthony Hamilton's "MediaMax'd" CD "Comin' From Where I'm From" achieving platinum status. Velvet Revolver's "Contraband" CD reached the #1 spot on Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart becoming the world's first #1 CD to include content management. "Contraband" achieved double-platinum status by selling more than 2 million units. Additionally, SunnComm's technology has appeared on many other best-selling albums in 2004, some of which have gone gold. 2004 ended with MediaMax being implemented on more than 75 commercially released CD titles, giving SunnComm nearly 100% of the American marketplace in copy control and enhancement technology.

MediaMax is state-of-the-art technology which features SunnComm's proprietary On-the-Fly Technology(TM) - giving the consumer a legal method of making licensed duplicate copies of the CD music they purchase without the record label needing to include a 2nd set of songs on the CD in a protected format. MediaMax also includes SecureBurn(TM) - SunnComm's extraordinary new technology that inhibits copying a copy of a MediaMax CD.

MediaMax is mastered directly on the audio CD and is accessible using a personal computer. SunnComm was the first company to commercially release a content-protected audio CD utilizing an early version of the Microsoft Windows Media Data Session Toolkit. Bonus features include on-board press kits, artist-related promotions, videos, song lyrics, artist bio page, photo gallery, web links and tune-sharing capability through SunnComm's MusicMail(TM) functionality. SunnComm's MediaMax suite of digital content enhancement technologies are created by integrating the Company's own proprietary technology with the Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT - News) Windows Media 9 and 10 Series media players, while maintaining inter-operability for both Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL - News) and Microsoft Windows-based systems.
